Cairns Esplanade 17th November 2008


A quick trip to Cairns allowed time to check out the Cairns Esplanade and for a change the tide was just right for wader (shorebird) watching unlike previous visits over the last few months, where the tide has been right out or very high. A 20 minute count ended up with 30 species. Plenty of variety of birds including an Australasian Darter, 2 Black-necked Stork and 12 species of migratory waders. Full list below:-

Peaceful Dove, Pied Imperial-Pigeon, Australasian Darter, Australian Pelican, Black-necked Stork, Great Egret, Striated Heron, Little Egret, Australian White Ibis, Royal Spoonbill, Lesser Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Bar-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Eastern Curlew, Terek Sandpiper, Grey-tailed Tattler, Common Greenshank, Great Knot, Red-necked Stint, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Little Tern, Gull-billed Tern, Caspian Tern, Silver Gull, Varied Honeyeater, Brown Honeyeater, Welcome Swallow, Common Myna.
